President Abbas meets with Syrian counterpart in Damascus, discusses developments

RAMALLAH, April 18, 2025 (WAFA) — President Mahmoud Abbas met today with Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa at the People's Palace in Damascus, as part of an official visit aimed at strengthening Palestinian-Syrian relations and discussing pressing regional developments.

During the meeting, President Abbas emphasized the importance of enhancing bilateral ties between the two nations and their peoples. He briefed his Syrian counterpart on the latest developments in the Palestinian arena, particularly the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.

President Abbas called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the urgent entry of humanitarian and medical aid into the region, the initiation of reconstruction without forced displacement, and the full withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from the enclave. He reiterated that the State of Palestine must assume full civil and security responsibility in Gaza, underlining that weapons must be exclusively under the authority of the state.

"Our top priority is a ceasefire in Gaza, the delivery of humanitarian and medical assistance, and the complete withdrawal of occupation forces," President Abbas stated. "We also seek to end Israeli violations in the West Bank, including Jerusalem, and to embark on a political process."

The President noted ongoing coordination with Saudi Arabia, the United States, and various Arab and European states to formulate a clear pathway toward implementing the two-state solution based on international legitimacy, including preparations for an international peace conference set to take place in June in New York.

President Abbas congratulated President Al-Sharaa on his leadership and the progress achieved toward a new Syria that reflects the aspirations of the Syrian people. He expressed his hope for continued stability and prosperity in Syria, reaffirming the deep and historic ties between the Palestinian and Syrian peoples.

“Our nations have shared a brotherly bond for generations, and we remain forever grateful for Syria’s historic support and hospitality toward Palestinian refugees,” he said.

The two leaders agreed to form joint committees aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors. Both sides also committed to continuing coordination and consultation on regional and international issues.
