RAMALLAH, August 28, 2026 (WAFA) — President Mahmoud Abbas sent a message of condolence to Norway's new King Haakon VIII following the death of King Harald V on Friday.
President Abbas also sent messages of condolence to Queen Mother Sonja and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
In his message to King Haakon VIII, President Abbas expressed his deep sorrow over the death of King Harald V, praising the late monarch for his decades of service as a wise national figure and for his role in leading Norway and strengthening its standing internationally.
The President conveyed his deepest condolences to Queen Sonja and the royal family, expressing appreciation for the late king and Queen Sonja’s efforts and for Norway’s positions in support of the Palestinian cause.
In his message to Prime Minister Gahr Støre, Abbas extended his condolences to the Norwegian government and people, expressing appreciation for Norway’s longstanding support for Palestinian rights and national institutions.
King Harald V, who was 89, died at Oslo University Hospital on Friday, August 28, at 6:35 a.m., according to the Norwegian Royal Court and the Norwegian government. He had reigned since 1991. His son, Crown Prince Haakon, succeeded him and became King Haakon VIII.
