CAIRO, September 6, 2026 (WAFA) – Secretary-General of the Arab League Nabil Fahmy affirmed the central role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) across its five areas of operation, stressing that there is no alternative to the agency in providing health and education services to millions of Palestinian refugees.

During a meeting with UNRWA Acting Commissioner-General Christian Saunders, Fahmy said that Israeli occupation attempts to undermine the agency’s role in the occupied Palestinian Territory seek to eliminate the refugee issue and deprive Palestinians of their humanitarian right to access essential services.

He called on donor countries to bridge UNRWA’s funding gap, warning that the widening shortfall is resulting in reductions in its services.

He also stressed the need to preserve the agency’s mandate, established by a UN resolution in 1949, and to counter all attempts to undermine its credibility or cast doubt on the neutrality of its humanitarian mission.
