RAMALLAH, September 6, 2026 (WAFA) – The Central Committee of the Palestinian National Liberation Movement (Fatah) today held a meeting in Ramallah, chaired by Vice President of the State of Palestine and Vice Chairman of the Palestinian National Liberation Movement (Fatah), Hussein al-Sheikh, to discuss the latest political developments at the regional and international levels, developments on the ground, and ongoing efforts and preparations for the upcoming general elections.
At the beginning of the meeting, the Central Committee unanimously elected Lieutenant General Jibril Rajoub as its Secretary and assigned Layla Ghannam to head the Development and Empowerment Commission, as part of efforts to advance organizational work and distribute responsibilities within the movement and its leadership.
The meeting extensively discussed the rapidly unfolding developments on the Palestinian scene amid the ongoing Israeli genocidal war against the Palestinian people and the escalation of Israeli attacks and violations in the occupied West Bank, including Jerusalem. These have been accompanied by repeated incursions into cities, villages and refugee camps, detentions, raids and attacks on citizens, as well as escalating terrorism by colonist militias and attacks on Palestinians, their property and lands, in an effort to impose new realities on the ground and undermine the foundations of Palestinian steadfastness. The Central Committee also saluted the steadfast detainees in Israeli occupation prisons, foremost among them Central Committee member and leader Marwan Barghouti.
The Central Committee also discussed the political repercussions of these developments and efforts at the national, Arab and international levels to confront Israeli policies, mobilize international positions rejecting the continuation of the occupation and its attacks, and reaffirm the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them the right to freedom, independence and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
The Central Committee also reviewed detailed reports on the movement’s organizational readiness and ongoing preparations on the ground for the upcoming general elections. It also reviewed the progress made by specialized committees and electoral assemblies across various governorates, covering all of the movement’s organizational structures and components, as well as the procedures undertaken and work completed in preparation for the elections.
The committee stressed the importance of maintaining a high pace of work, raising organizational and field readiness, and completing all necessary procedures and arrangements to ensure the movement’s preparedness for this national and democratic milestone, strengthen its organizational presence across the governorates, and underscore the importance of the general elections as a national and democratic entitlement that renews Palestinian political and institutional life.
The meeting also addressed several organizational and national issues, mechanisms to strengthen the movement's unity, and ways to develop organizational work to enhance its ability to fulfill its national and political role at this critical stage. It also stressed the importance of preserving the unity of the independent Palestinian national position and decision.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Fatah Central Committee affirmed its commitment to continuing work at the political, organizational and field levels, following up on priority national issues in a manner that serves the higher interests of the Palestinian people and strengthens their steadfastness and adherence to their legitimate national rights to freedom, independence and the establishment of an independent state.
