AMMAN, October 26, 2026 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas met on Monday with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi and his accompanying ministerial delegation in the Jordanian capital, Amman.
President Abbas renewed his fraternal congratulations to al-Zaidi on assuming office, wishing him success in his duties.
The President praised Iraq’s steadfast support for the Palestinian cause, commended the support for Palestinian rights expressed in al-Zaidi’s speech at the United Nations, and expressed appreciation for the humanitarian assistance provided to the Palestinian people, Iraq’s support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), and its hosting of injured Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.
President Abbas also expressed deep appreciation for the care and attention Iraq extends to members of the Palestinian community and Palestinian refugees residing in the country.
President Abbas affirmed the State of Palestine’s support for Iraq’s unity, sovereignty, security, stability, and prosperity, praising efforts to strengthen stability and stressing the importance of prioritizing dialogue among countries and working to end wars in the region to promote regional security and stability.
The President briefed the Iraqi prime minister on the grave situation in the Gaza Strip amid the ongoing genocide, destruction, and starvation, the worsening humanitarian suffering of the Palestinian people, and attempts to forcibly displace them. The President stressed the need to intensify Arab and international efforts to halt the Israeli occupation’s aggression, protect civilians, and ensure the unimpeded entry of humanitarian aid.
President Abbas also outlined the ongoing Israeli escalation in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, amid increasing attacks by Israeli occupation forces and colonist terrorism, colonial expansion, attempts at annexation and displacement, and continued violations against Islamic and Christian holy sites. The President stressed the need to stop these crimes and violations and provide international protection for the Palestinian people.
The meeting also addressed the severe financial and economic blockade facing the State of Palestine due to Israel’s continued withholding of approximately $7 billion in Palestinian clearance revenues, which has severely undermined the government’s ability to meet its obligations and provide essential services to citizens.
Abbas praised Iraq’s positions in support of Palestine and stressed the importance of continued Arab support to strengthen the Palestinian people’s steadfastness and protect their national institutions amid current political, economic, and humanitarian challenges.
The President also underscored the importance of activating the joint Palestinian-Iraqi committee to advance political, economic, cultural, and educational cooperation between the two countries in ways that serve the shared interests of their peoples.
For his part, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi reaffirmed Iraq’s historic and principled position in support of the Palestinian cause, stressing that Palestine is an integral part of Iraq’s identity and national position and that Iraq will not abandon its support for the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights.
He said that ensuring justice for the Palestinian people and guaranteeing their rights are fundamental to achieving security and stability in the region.
He renewed Iraq’s support for a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian cause that guarantees the Palestinian people their full rights on their land, ends the occupation, and secures their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
