GEDCo Calls for Ending Crisis in Gaza

GAZA, June 27, 2010 (WAFA)- Due to the seriousness of the current electrical power crisis existing in the Gaza Governorates, Gaza Electricity Distribution Company (GEDCo) appealed, today, to all national and political authorities to take responsibilities to cure and rectify this crisis at a deep level as quickly as possible, through providing the quantities of fuel needed to run the turbines at the power plant, which will reduce the great suffering and serious for more than 1.5 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, and avoid impending disaster to the services they are provided and their wellbeing and interests.

The crisis is caused by the continuous shortages in the needed quantities of electrical energy. With the aggravation of the crisis and the severity of consequences and implications at the current stage after the complete shutdown of the power plant because of the lack of the needed fuel for operation, GEDCo also called upon the Arab countries through the Arab League to take a positive and effective position to help remove the current difficult situation with funding of fuel purchases to the power plant or contribute in fuel purchases.

GEDCo called, as well, upon the international community and UN to assume its responsibilities towards the current crisis, and upon all citizens to handle and behave with high responsibility, and to fulfill of their obligations and duties towards GEDCo.

GEDCo Under these difficult conditions stated that it represents the sector of electricity distribution in all Gaza Governorates, distributes whatever electricity reached and supplied to its networks from the different sources of supply.

The complete shutdown of the power plant has increased the percentage of electricity shortage to 60%, as the demand of Gaza Governorates (actual loads) has reached 300 MW, while the available after the shutdown of the power plant is 137 MW, the available amount (137MW) will be distributed on all Gaza Strip needs under emergency program reflects mathematically the quantity available that distributed to everyone as of today Saturday, 26/06/2010 by connecting each area to electricity for 6 hours, followed by disconnection (without electricity ) for 12 hours, and this will be repeated again and again until any major changes to the amount of available energy.

GEDCo is aware of the risks and impacts that will reach all sectors of consumption as a result of this severe shortage, especially the water supply sector, health services and medical facilities and all essential basic and humanitarian providing services institutions.
