FM at UN Jerusalem session: US decision affects its position as broker for peace only

NEW YORK, December 21, 2017 (WAFA) - Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki Thursday said the United States’ decision will not affect the status of Jerusalem, but affect the status of the United States as a broker for peace.

He said during the 10th emergency session of the United Nations General Assembly that the US has failed in the Jerusalem test despite “our warnings and warnings of the whole world to take too lightly this decision and contribute to the transformation of a solvable political conflict into a boundless religious war.”

Al-Malki said the request to hold the meeting is to uphold the voice of the international community, which was reflected in the reactions of the people and the positions of world governments, as well as the overwhelming majority in the Security Council, which demands maintaining the legal status of Jerusalem and the nullification of all attempts to change this situation.

He thanked the Arab Group, member states of the Organization of Islamic Corporation (OIC) and the Non-Aligned Movement for convening this emergency meeting after the US veto has hindered the Security Council‘s ability to maintain international peace and security.

The meeting follows the resolutions of the Arab Ministerial Council held in Cairo at the request of Jordan and Palestine as well as the special summit of the OIC held in Istanbul.

"We meet today not because of any hostility towards the United States, but because of its decision, which is an attack against the right of the original Palestinian people in the city of Jerusalem, the Arab nation and all Muslims and Christians of the world.”

He added, "This decision serves the forces of extremism and the Israeli government in the implementation of its colonial agenda, and it is unimaginable that there is any credibility for a peace plan that excludes Jerusalem.”

Al-Malki recalled the reactions of world countries, regional groups, parliaments, the Secretary General of the UN and Islamic and Christian figures. "Doesn’t the US ask why it stands alone in this position and why its closest allies have not been able to ignore its decision?”

He said: “The answer is clear. Jerusalem is the key to war and peace in the Middle East and the world at large.”
