ICRC warns of Gaza medical system collapse

GAZA, June 16, 2025 (WAFA) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has expressed alarm over the continued deterioration of the medical system in the Gaza Strip, particularly in light of recent evacuation orders around the Nasser Medical Complex.

In a statement published on X, the ICRC reported that its field hospital in Gaza received over 170 patients yesterday in a short period of time. Many of the wounded suffered gunshot injuries and said they had been trying to access a food distribution site.

“This is another indication of the dangers that civilians are constantly exposed to and the deteriorating humanitarian environment. Today, over 200 cases have arrived at the field hospital, marking the highest number received by the Red Cross Field Hospital in one mass casualty incident,” the statement said.

The ICRC reiterated the obligations under international humanitarian law (IHL), stating: “International humanitarian law (IHL) requires taking constant care to spare the civilian population, civilians, and civilian objects in the conduct of military operations. Yet for over 20 months, civilians continue to pay the highest price in this conflict.”

The organization stressed the urgent need for humanitarian access and protection of civilians: “Civilians must have access to food, water, medical supplies, and other essentials. To this end, the rapid and unimpeded flow of humanitarian assistance must be allowed and facilitated. Those injured must receive the medical care and attention they require as rapidly as possible.”

The ICRC also called for the respect and protection of medical personnel, humanitarian relief workers, and civil defense teams, noting that many have been killed or injured in recent months.
