49% of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails are held arbitrarily without charges
Israeli court continues to legitimize arbitrary detention and torture policies against Palestinian prisoners
RAMALLAH, June 17, 2026 (WAFA) – The Palestinian Prisoner's Society (PPS) stated that the Israeli Supreme Court's decision to uphold the detention of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya serves as a stark illustration of the policy of arbitrary detention imposed on thousands of detainees from the Gaza Strip and still affecting hundreds held in Israeli prisons and military camps under the so-called "Unlawful Combatants Law."
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the PPS said that the law has been transformed into a legal tool for entrenching open-ended detention outside the basic guarantees of justice and international law.
The PPS added that the Supreme Court's decision is part of a long series of rulings that reflect the extent of complicity within the Israeli judicial system in entrenching the ongoing genocidal policy targeting Palestinian prisoners and detainees.
The society noted that this complicity is manifested in the legitimization of the continued arbitrary detention of thousands of Palestinians, including detainees from the Gaza Strip and administrative detainees from the West Bank, Jerusalem, and the Palestinian territories occupied in 1948.
It also pointed to the judiciary's policy of delay and procrastination in considering petitions related to prisoners' detention conditions and the grave violations committed against them.
