Detainees Affairs Commission: grim conditions reported inside Ofer prison

GAZA, November 23, 2025 (WAFA) – The Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs Commission (DEDAC) reported a bleak picture of conditions inside the Israeli prison of Ofer, citing testimonies from three detainees describing some of the “harshest treatment,” including medical neglect, physical assaults, and daily room raids.

A lawyer for the commission said prisoner Ahmad Adel Harish, from Beitunia west of Ramallah, detained since August 31, 2025, suffers from severe stomach pain suspected to be caused by a bacterial infection. He receives only painkillers, while medical staff often delay hours or sometimes fail to appear, reportedly calling detainees provocatively from behind a window, saying, “Who wants to die?”

Harish described collective room raids where nails clippers were broken, detainees were beaten, and some were restrained for hours. A female soldier reportedly entered the room under the pretext of receiving complaints, but Harish was later punished for filing a grievance, either with an administrative detention order or through humiliating treatment.

Prisoner Naji Sharif Awadallah, 24, from Beitunia, detained since August 28, 2025, under a four-month administrative detention order, described the camp conditions as extremely harsh, including continuous beatings, daily searches and raids, meager food, lack of hygiene, and sleep deprivation caused by the removal of bedding at 6 a.m.

Another detainee, Ezzedine Ahmad Khaddour, 20, from Biddu, northwest of Jerusalem, suffers from a leg injury he was receiving treatment for prior to his arrest. Despite needing medication and medical follow-up, he has received no treatment for 70 days. Khaddour, a former prisoner, was re-arrested on September 2, 2025.

The commission noted that prison rooms lack basic necessities, forcing detainees to drink water directly from bathroom taps without cups.

DEDAC emphasized that these testimonies reflect the deteriorating humanitarian situation inside Ofer prison and called for urgent intervention to halt ongoing violations against prisoners.
