Prisoners' institutions submit urgent appeal to Israeli side requesting return of female detainee's amputated legs

RAMALLAH, Monday, June 3, 2024 (WAFA) - The Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) reported that the lawyer of the injured Palestinian female detainee, Wafa Jarar, submitted an urgent appeal to the Israeli side requesting the return of Jarar's amputated legs to her family for burial in accordance with Islamic law.

Under Islamic law, respect for human dignity requires that severed limbs be buried, regardless of whether the person in question is dead or alive.

In a joint statement released today, the Commission and PPS explained that as part of the continued legal follow-up on Jarar's case, her lawyer submitted a request to the so-called Israeli Ministry of Health, the director of HaEmek Medical Center in the northern Israeli city of Afula and the director of the intensive care unit where she underwent the surgery, to return the detainee’s amputated legs.

The joint statement indicated that the lawyer’s request followed a surprising verbal response from one of the hospital's doctors that the amputated limbs were disposed of, slamming such action as a new violation added to the composite crime committed against Jarar since her detention from her home in Jenin on May 21 by the occupation.

The lawyer requested to obtain her complete medical file from the moment of her transfer to the hospital on May 21 until her discharge on May 30.

The lawyer sought an explanation for what had happened on May 27; the day on which she underwent below-knee amputation, which was performed with her family's consent and legal follow-up.

The detainee later had her legs amputated above the knee without her family’s consent, while she was under heavy anesthesia and on ventilators, to be added to the list of violations and crimes committed against Jarar by the Israeli occupation.

The Commission and PPS slammed what had happened to Jarar as part of the ongoing and composite crime against her, based on the information revealed in the legal follow-up.

The prisoners’ institutions emphasized that the next necessary legal steps would be determined based on replies received from the concerned authorities.

It should be noted that throughout Jarar’s stay at Afula Hospital, her lawyer was not provided with any information regarding her health condition despite legal attempts. The lawyer was only provided verbal reports about her health status during several visits he had made.

The occupation eventually announced its intention to cancel the administrative detention order issued against Jarar to avoid accountability for its crime and the completion of Jarar's much-needed treatment. Jarar was released on May 30 and transferred to Ibn Sina Hospital in Jenin.

The occupation authorities detained Jarar from her home on May 21 during a military assault on Jenin and its camp. She received a four-month administrative detention order following her detention.

The occupation later announced Jara’s injury and her transfer to Afula Hospital. Her severe injuries led to the amputation of her legs and the subsequent health problems, adding to the various injuries she sustained during the detention.

The Commission and PPS stressed that Jarar's suffering, which began on the day of her detention, and the composite crime committed against her did not end with her release, which is indicative of the increasing levels of the occupation’s crimes, which is part of its ongoing war of genocide and comprehensive aggression carried out against the Palestinian people.

They held the occupation fully responsible for Jarar's severe health condition, noting that she was among dozens of detainees who were injured since the start of the Israeli genocidal war on the 7th of October, 2023. The occupation measures against injured detainees included abuse, torture, medical crimes and negligence.

Jarar, 49, is the wife of administrative detainee Abdul-Jabbar Jarar, who has been detained in israeli jails since last February.
