RAMALLAH, Friday, September 28, 2023 (WAFA) – Palestinian prisoner Omar Mahmoud Turkman has reached his 21st consecutive year behind bars in Israeli detention, today said the Palestinian Prisoners' Society (PPS).
Turkman, who hails from Jenin, has been incarcerated since 2003 when he was arrested by Israeli authorities, and he was subsequently sentenced to a 25-year prison term. His imprisonment has left an indelible mark on his life and the lives of his loved ones.
Muntasir Samour, the director of the PPS in Jenin, spoke about Turkman's long and arduous journey in captivity. He emphasized the unjust nature of Turkman's sentence, which has deprived him of two decades of freedom.
Advocacy groups and human rights organizations have consistently raised concerns about the treatment of Palestinian detainees in Israeli detention, including inadequate medical care and the use of administrative detention without trial.
Turkman’s story is a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by Palestinian prisoners - imprisoned for their rightful resistance of the occupation - and their families.
