Newspaper Review: Israeli settlers' violations focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Wednesday, June 1, 2022 (WAFA) – News about the continious violations committed by the Israeli forces and settlers in several areas in the occupied West Bank hit the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida, al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that Israeli soldiers opened fire and injured Palestinians who were protesting an intrusion by extremist settlers into a mosque in the southern West Bank town of Halhoul. The soldiers raided Halhoul to clear the way for the settlers who wanted to hold rituals at Nabi Younis mosque in the town provoking clashes with Palestinian residents.

The papers added thatIsraeli settlers attacked Palestinian residents’ homes in the East Jerusalem town of Silwan, causing injuries to at least three youth. Settlers, under the protection of Israeli police, attacked Palestinian residents’ homes in Wadi al-Rababeh neighborhood in Silwan, leading to clashes. They further vandalized a vehicle belonging to one of the residents.

Three youth were injured in the attack and were transferred to hospital for medical treatment. Israeli police also detained two youth.

In the village of Shoufa, southeast of the northern West Bank city of Tulkarm, settlers attacked farmers working in their lands in an attempt to force them to leave the area, according to the newspapers.

In the south of the West Bank, settlers from the illegal Itzharman settlement outpost near the village of Jwaya, in Masafer Yatta, attacked herders while grazing in the open pastures and forced them to leave the area, as reported in the papers.

The dailies highlighted President Mahmoud Abbas' meeting with Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate, Ayman Safadi.

The President briefed the Jordanian FM the latest developments in the Palestinian territories, and the dangerous Israeli escalation against the Palestinian people and their Islamic and Christian holy sites.

President Abbas said the current situation cannot be accepted nor tolerated amid the absence of a political horizon and international protection for the Palestinian people and in light of the Israeli occupation's disavowal of its obligations in accordance with signed agreements and resolutions of international legitimacy.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Safadi, and secretary-general of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) Executive Committee, Hussein Al-Sheikh, affirmed the continuation of joint action at all levels to stop the dangerous escalation policy of the Israeli government and extremist settlers.
