Hours after residents opened it, Israeli police re-blocks main Silwan road

JERUSALEM, September 3, 2016 (WAFA) – Israeli police Saturday re-blocked with concrete cubes the main entrance to the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan only hours after local residents had reopened the road, according to residents.

Police had shut down Wadi Hilweh road that leads from Magharbeh Gate of Jerusalem’s the Old City to the center of the neighborhood, disrupting traffic and daily life for the neighborhood’s 30,000 Palestinian residents.

As a result, residents on Friday removed the concrete block and reopened the road, considered the main artery for Silwan.

Police reportedly detained two Palestinian residents believed were responsible for removing the blocks and seized their vehicles.

The settlement complex, the City of David, is located on that road.

The settlement organization, Elad, is also preparing with government approval a massive settlement project in the same area known as Kedem Compound, which is part of the City of David settlement enterprise.
