Saudi Arabia stresses the need to strengthen the UN’s role in supporting the Palestinian cause

NEW YORK, June 16, 2026 (WAFA) – Saudi Arabia reaffirmed the importance of strengthening the United Nations' role in protecting international law, supporting the Palestinian cause, and implementing relevant UN resolutions.

Speaking on behalf of the Arab Group during a hearing with UN Secretary-General candidate María Espinosa, Saudi Arabia emphasized support for UN efforts to address global challenges and promote peace, security, and sustainable development.

Saudi Arabia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Abdulaziz Al-Wasel, said Arab countries look forward to working with the next Secretary-General to improve the effectiveness of the organization.

The discussion also addressed support for UNRWA, UN financial challenges, assistance for developing countries, implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, Security Council reform, and the UN80 initiative.

The next UN Secretary-General is expected to be elected in 2026 and will begin a five-year term on January 1, 2027.
