JERUSALEM, June 16, 2026 (WAFA) – The Jerusalem Governorate said that the reported opening of a so-called embassy for the separatist region of “Somaliland” in occupied Jerusalem constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and relevant UN resolutions, and a rejected and condemned step that undermines the international legal system based on the inadmissibility of acquiring territory by force.
It described the move as a direct assault on the legal and historical status of occupied Jerusalem, which is an integral part of the Palestinian territory occupied in 1967 and the capital of the State of Palestine.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the governorate stressed that the establishment of any embassy or diplomatic mission in occupied Jerusalem clearly violates UN Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolutions 476 and 478 (1980), which declared all Israeli measures aimed at changing the city’s character, legal status, and demographic composition null and void, and called on states to refrain from establishing diplomatic missions there.
It added that such a step does not grant legitimacy to the Israeli occupation or its illegal measures aimed at imposing alleged sovereignty over occupied Jerusalem, nor does it create any legal rights inconsistent with the city’s internationally recognized status.
The statement said the move is part of ongoing attempts to impose political and diplomatic realities in violation of international law, aimed at entrenching the illegal annexation of occupied Jerusalem and disregarding the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people, in defiance of international consensus and binding legal norms.
The governorate called on the international community and the United Nations, as well as all states, to assume their legal and moral responsibilities, strictly adhere to relevant international resolutions on the Palestinian cause and Jerusalem, and take practical steps to stop ongoing Israeli violations and prevent any actions that could encourage further settlement and expansion policies.
It reaffirmed that occupied Jerusalem will remain an inseparable part of the Palestinian territory occupied in 1967 and the capital of the State of Palestine, and that all measures aimed at changing its legal or historical status are null and void and will not affect the established rights of the Palestinian people under international law and UN resolutions.
