NEW YORK, August 26, 2026 (WAFA) – The United Nations Security Council held its monthly session on the question of Palestine on Wednesday, followed by closed consultations, during which briefings were delivered on the situation.
The briefers stressed that the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip remains fragile due to continued Israeli bombardment, with Palestinians still being killed, at a time when the situation in the West Bank continues to deteriorate rapidly.
They said addressing the tragic situation in Gaza remains of paramount importance, as residents continue to endure unbearable conditions and immense suffering and are beginning to lose hope.
They stressed the need to establish a political horizon that would end the illegal occupation, realize the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and advance the two-state solution.
The briefers said the necessary means to move forward on a credible path are available, which, together with previous Security Council resolutions, constitute a political vision, a practical framework and a coordinated international effort.
The briefings called for action to translate this vision into concrete steps, stressing the need for the immediate and full implementation of Security Council Resolution 2803 to consolidate the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid and advance reconstruction.
The briefers stressed that improving living conditions in Gaza requires moving beyond the emergency relief phase and restoring essential systems and services without further delay, particularly sanitation, waste management, health care and livelihoods.
They also highlighted continued restrictions on the entry of vital humanitarian supplies, warning that the approaching winter season presents another major challenge for residents of Gaza, who continue to live among the rubble and in tents.
Regarding the West Bank, the briefers warned that widespread attacks by colonists are continuing amid an almost complete lack of accountability for such crimes.
They added that Israeli forces have repeatedly failed to protect Palestinians from attacks by colonists, and have reportedly facilitated or participated in such violence. They stressed that Israel, as the occupying power, must ensure the protection of the civilian population and hold perpetrators accountable.
The briefings also addressed the Israeli occupation authorities' raid on the Qalandia Training Center, operated by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Jerusalem, reiterating calls on Israel to act in accordance with its obligations under international law and cease all attempts to seize, control or confiscate UNRWA facilities.
