RAMALLAH, August 20, 2026 (WAFA) — The Central Committee of the Palestinian National Liberation Movement (Fatah) today held a meeting chaired by Deputy Chairman Hussein al-Sheikh to discuss a number of political and security issues, including Israel's ongoing attacks against the Palestinian people amid its war on the Gaza Strip, as well as continued settler attacks, violence and displacement of Palestinians in the West Bank, including Jerusalem.
The meeting also addressed preparations and efforts to ensure the movement's success in the upcoming elections.
In a statement issued today, the Central Committee said the current phase requires the highest levels of national and organizational responsibility, strengthening unity within Fatah and consolidating efforts and resources to confront the political and field challenges facing the Palestinian cause, in line with the higher national interest of the Palestinian people.
It also stressed the need to continue dialogue with Palestinian national forces and factions in a manner that strengthens national unity and serves the higher national interest.
The committee stressed the importance of continuing political and diplomatic efforts at all levels to halt Israel's ongoing aggression against the Gaza Strip, stop Israeli violations and settler attacks in the West Bank, and confront policies of displacement, settlement expansion and land seizure.
It affirmed that the Palestinian people will continue to stand firm and uphold their land and legitimate national rights.
The committee discussed a number of internal organizational issues and adopted the necessary decisions and recommendations, including the election of Central Committee member Tayseer al-Bardini as deputy secretary of the Central Committee.
It affirmed that its meetings would continue, alongside close follow-up of political, security and organizational developments, in a manner that serves the Palestinian national project and preserves Fatah's unity and role in the national struggle.
The Central Committee also discussed organizational preparations for the upcoming elections and ways to enhance readiness across the movement's various organizational frameworks and mobilize its cadres and supporters to ensure effective and responsible participation in the national electoral process, reflecting Fatah's presence and historic role in Palestinian national and political life.
