Arab League condemns opening of "Somaliland Region" embassy in occupied Jerusalem

CAIRO, June 16, 2026 (WAFA) – The General Secretariat of the Arab League on Tuesday condemned the opening of an embassy by the so-called "Somaliland Region" in occupied Jerusalem, describing the move as a clear violation of the international consensus regarding the legal status of the city and a setback to international efforts aimed at achieving a just and comprehensive peace based on international legitimacy resolutions and the two-state solution.

In a statement issued by its Palestine and Occupied Arab Territories Sector, the Arab League stressed that the move, which it rejected in both form and substance, constitutes another attempt to entrench the illegal occupation and reflects the continued implementation by the occupying power of measures aimed at altering the legal, historical and demographic character of the Holy City, isolating it from its Palestinian surroundings, and undermining Palestinian presence and sovereignty therein.

The League affirmed that such measures are null and void and carry no legal effect under international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.

It further reiterated that East Jerusalem is an integral part of the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, renewing its steadfast support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them their right to establish an independent and sovereign state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the Arab Peace Initiative and relevant UN resolutions.

The General Secretariat also reaffirmed its full solidarity with the Federal Republic of Somalia and its unwavering support for the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

It called on the international community to uphold its legal and political responsibilities by taking the necessary positions and measures to preserve the legal and historical status of Jerusalem and prevent any attempts to impose a new reality on the ground or legitimize the Israeli occupation and its unlawful practices in the occupied Palestinian territory.
