President Abbas reaffirms commitment to national reform agenda and statehood efforts

RAMALLAH, June 11, 2026 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday reaffirmed his commitment to continuing the implementation of the national reform program pledged to the Palestinian people and the international community, including strengthening governance, transparency and the rule of law.

The announcement came as the President chaired the opening session of the newly elected Revolutionary Council of the Fatah movement at the presidential headquarters in Ramallah, with simultaneous participation from Gaza, Cairo and Beirut, and in the presence of newly elected members of the movement’s Central Committee.

In his speech, President Abbas said the Palestinian people are facing systematic efforts aimed at undermining the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, alongside ongoing Israeli violations of international law, including settlement expansion, settler violence, annexation attempts in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the withholding of Palestinian revenues, and attacks on Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.

He stressed the need to continue resilience and peaceful popular resistance and defend the national project. The President also expressed readiness to implement UN Security Council Resolution 2803, emphasizing continued efforts to mobilize international support for the two-state solution in line with international legitimacy and the New York Declaration.

He also highlighted the importance of advancing Palestinian unity through adherence to the Palestine Liberation Organization as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people, and to its political program and international commitments, under the principle of one authority, one law and one legitimate weapon.

The President said preparations are underway to hold elections for the Palestinian National Council next November, including general legislative elections in the Palestinian territories and abroad, along with the completion of a constitution, political parties law and general elections law. He added that presidential elections would follow in the coming year.

President Abbas renewed his commitment to the national reform agenda, including improving governance and transparency, strengthening the justice and security sectors, modernizing public administration, and developing education curricula in line with UNESCO standards.

He further emphasized efforts to enhance social protection systems, combat corruption, and reinforce accountability and integrity, while working with international and regional partners to implement reforms within set timelines.

The President also reaffirmed that the issue of Palestinian refugees remains central to the national cause, stressing continued commitment to the right of return and compensation in accordance with UN Resolution 194, and support for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) until a just solution is reached.

Addressing the people of Gaza, President Abbas said they remain steadfast on their land despite ongoing hardships, affirming unity with Palestinians in the West Bank, Jerusalem and the diaspora in facing efforts to undermine the national cause and achieve an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
