President Abbas discusses developments with Italian Prime Minister Meloni in Rome

ROME, December 12, 2025 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas of the State of Palestine met on Friday with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome, where they discussed the latest developments in Palestine.

During the meeting, President Abbas praised Prime Minister Meloni's efforts to strengthen bilateral relations, highlighting the historic and renewed ties between the two countries and their peoples. 

He expressed gratitude to Italy for providing humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, treating injured children, training Palestinian police, and participating in the European monitoring force at the Rafah border crossing.

The President briefed the Italian Prime Minister on the latest developments on the Palestinian arena and ongoing efforts to consolidate the ceasefire and deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. 

He emphasized the importance of implementing the second phase of the Trump plan, which includes the handover of weapons by Hamas and other armed factions, establishing a single legitimate Palestinian police force, the withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from Gaza, and the full assumption of responsibilities by the State of Palestine in the territory, including reconstruction.

He also underscored the importance of preventing forced displacement, achieving comprehensive calm in the West Bank to stop Israeli settlement expansion and annexation attempts, stopping settler violence, releasing withheld Palestinian funds, and protecting Islamic and Christian holy sites.

Accompanying President Abbas were PLO Executive Committee member Ziad Abu Amr, Presidential Advisor for Diplomatic Affairs Majdi Khaldi, and Palestinian Ambassador to Italy Mona Abuamara.
