Newspapers Review: Calls to save life of detainee tortured in Israel to almost death

RAMALLAH, Monday, September 30, 2019 (WAFA) – News about the Palestinian detainee, Samer Arabeed, who is reported in critical condition in hospital and in a life-threating situation following severe torture by Israeli interrogators, hit the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic daily.

Al-Ayyam said in its main front page story on this topic that calls were made to save Arabeed’s life, while al-Quds said the Israeli security service, the Shabak, got permission to use ruthless and severe methods in interrogating Arabeed, who is in critical condition in hospital, and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Arabeed’s health deteriorated due to barbaric torture.

The main front page story in al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Quds focused on the Israeli measures against Palestinians in the occupied territories, including army raids and arrests, attacks by settlers and acts by fanatic Jews at Muslim holy places such as Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem and the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron, which was closed for Muslims for two days due to the Jewish New Year holiday.

Al-Quds said Israeli agricultural minister and an extremist rabbi broke into Al-Aqsa Mosque yesterday leading a large group of extremist Jews who are looking at destroying the Muslim holy site in order to build a Jewish temple on its ruins.

It quoted an Israeli military commander saying the West Bank is not a security threat to Israel.

Al-Ayyam also said soldiers raided a welcoming home party in al-Lubban al-Sharqiyeh, north of Ramallah, for a prisoner released from Israeli jail and used teargas to disperse the guests causing several suffocation cases.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Al-Aqsa and Al-Quds funds allocated in their annual meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, $50 million for projects in Palestine.

It said President Mahmoud Abbas sent his condolences for the death of former French President Jack Chirac, while the paper’s editorial was a eulogy of Chirac.

The paper quoted Palestinian Minister of Economy saying his ministry was reviewing entry of Israeli products into the Palestinian market.

The three papers also reported on the developments in the United States with efforts to impeach President Donald Trump and the difficulty of forming an Israeli government headed by Benjamin Netanyahu.
