BRUSSELS, June 23, 2025 (WAFA) – Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmyr Stenergård described the situation in the Gaza Strip, which is being subjected to a genocide by Israel, as "extremely serious," calling for action and "not remaining a spectator."
This came in press statements by the Swedish minister on Monday, ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels to review the suspension of the Association Agreement with Israel.
She added that Sweden is the second largest provider of humanitarian aid to the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, expressing her country's deep disappointment at being unable to deliver this aid due to the Israeli blockade.
She stressed that the "extremely serious situation" in Gaza must not be forgotten, warning: "People are suffering, and we cannot remain mere spectators."
The Association Agreement between the European Union and Israel, which entered into force in 2000, provides the legal framework for political dialogue and economic cooperation between the two parties. Article 2 of the Agreement stipulates that the partnership is conditional on "commitment to human rights and international law."
