TEL AVIV, June 23, 2025 (WAFA) – The Israeli Knesset is scheduled to begin formal proceedings on Tuesday to expel Member of Knesset Ayman Odeh, head of the Hadash-Ta’al alliance, following public statements in which he expressed solidarity with Gaza and Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons.
The expulsion initiative was launched by Likud MK Avihai Boaron, who announced that he had secured 68 signatures from fellow Knesset members in support of the motion. Under Israeli law, a minimum of 90 votes out of 120 are required to approve the expulsion of a sitting MK. Should the motion pass, Odeh would be entitled to appeal the decision to the Israeli Supreme Court.
Odeh has criticized the decision to proceed with expulsion measures despite emergency restrictions imposed during wartime, which limit Knesset discussions exclusively to matters related to the war. He pointed to what he views as a contradiction in allowing his case to move forward while other legislative topics remain off the table.
Odeh affirmed his determination to stand firm in defending his humanitarian positions while actively challenging what he described as fascist policies.
He emphasized that for decades, he has represented the views of his people and the conscience of many, maintaining a consistent stance. However, he noted that what has changed is the growing shift toward right-wing fascism within the state of Israel.
Odeh pointed out that, similar to Arab citizens being expelled from their workplaces, Arab students being dismissed from universities and Arabs being denied access to shelters, he is also being targeted as a member of a community steadfastly holding onto its survival and its national and humanitarian principles.
He concluded by accusing Israeli authorities of causing the killing of tens of thousands in Gaza and destroying hospitals, universities, and essential infrastructure. He held them responsible and reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to a vision that offers a genuine alternative for both peoples to live free from occupation and war, with the realization of rights and lasting peace.
