Palestinian prisoner’s wife gives birth to second child conceived through smuggled sperm

JENIN, June 23, 2025 9WAFA) - The wife of a Palestinian prisoner, impregnated through smuggled sperm, has given birth to their second child.

The wife of prisoner Sa’ed Ali Al-Hithnawi, 45, gave birth to a healthy baby girl named Mawada at the Istishari Arab Hospital in Ramallah. The child was conceived via artificial insemination using sperm smuggled out of prison by her husband. This marks the couple’s second child born through this method; their first child was born last year under similar circumstances.

Al-Hithnawi, a resident of Qabatiya near Jenin, was arrested in 2006 and is currently serving a 35-year sentence. He married two years ago while still in prison.

Since Palestinian political prisoners are not allowed conjugal visits, some resort to smuggling sperm so their wives can conceive before age or time becomes a limiting factor, particularly for those serving lengthy sentences.

The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) emphasized that the act of fathering children through smuggled sperm has become a powerful symbol of willpower and resistance inside Israeli prisons. Despite the complexities and risks involved, several prisoners have succeeded in taking this step, demonstrating their enduring commitment to life, hope, and the future.
