Scabies affects around 80% of Palestinian detainees amid systematic abuse in Israeli prisons

RAMALLAH, November 8, 2026 (WAFA) – The Palestinian Prisoners’ Society said testimonies gathered during visits by its legal teams to dozens of Palestinian male and female detainees in October and early November 2026 once again exposed conditions inside Israeli prisons, describing them as a systematic policy rather than isolated violations.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the society said the testimonies centered on four main issues: the continued spread of scabies, deteriorating health conditions among sick and chronically ill detainees and those injured, many of whom require surgery and assistive devices; repeated raids and repression; and daily practices of abuse and torture that turn every aspect of prison life into a means of torment.

Dozens of detainees reported that special units affiliated with the Israeli Prison Service raid prison sections armed with various weapons and accompanied by police dogs. Dozens of injuries from rubber-coated bullets and unfamiliar weapons have been recorded in recent months. Detainees described the effects on their bodies, saying some weapons cause burns while others leave them unable to move.

Although the frequency of raids varies from one prison to another, the society said repression continues, with no more than two weeks between incidents. In some sections, raids recur every two or three days, targeting selected rooms. The beatings have caused broken teeth and ribs, as well as bruising across detainees’ bodies.

The society said thousands of detainees suffer from a severe shortage of clothing, one of the main factors contributing to the spread of scabies. According to testimonies from detainees visited by its legal teams and those released, around 80% of male and female detainees, including children, are infected, with no meaningful treatment or efforts to address the underlying causes.

It also noted that showering conditions in some sections of the Naqab prison have deteriorated following a major breakdown in the showers, compounded by severe overcrowding in several major prisons amid continuing daily detention campaigns.
