Newspaper Review: Killing Palestinian Teen in Hebron, Hunger Striker’s Critical Health Condition Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, February 11, 2016 (WAFA) - The killing of a 16-year-old Palestinian teen by Israeli forces in Hebron’s al-‘Arrub refugee camp and the hunger striking detainee Mohammad al-Qiq’s critical health condition hit the front page headlines in the Palestinian dailies.

 

The three dailies reported that a Palestinian boy was killed by Israeli forces in al-‘Arrub refugee camp. They also reported as part of the main front page news item that the Bethlehem village of Nahhalin was blockaded by Israeli forces for the second day in a row.

 

Highlighting al-Qiq’s critical health condition, al-Quds reported that al-Qiq’s health condition was “rapidly” deteriorating and that Israel continued to “obstinately” refuse to release al-Qiq.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported in this regard that following his serious health deterioration, a medical personnel was tasked with constantly monitoring al-Qiq’s health.

 

Highlighting Israeli forces and settlers’ assaults against Palestinians across the occupied territories, the  dailies reported that Israeli forces demolished Palestinian houses and destroyed a water pipeline in the Jordan Valley village of al-Jiftlek.

 

Al-Quds also reported that Israeli forces raided the Ramallah village of Beit ‘Ur al-Tahta and razed agricultural roads in the Nablus village of Qusra.

 

It also reported that settlers attacked a Palestinian driver with an axe near the northern West Bank city of Qalqiliya.

 

Highlighting Israeli efforts to seize Palestinian property in Jerusalem and obliterate its Palestinian nature,  al-Quda revealed that Israeli “Western Wall Heritage Fund” seized a Mamluk-era building beneath the public bath of Hammam al-‘Ein in Jerusalem’s Old City.

 

Al-Ayyam reported that Israel plans to build a tourist hotel opposite to the Islamic cemetery of Ma’man Allah in West Jerusalem.

 

Furthermore, the three dailies reported on Israeli Labor Party leader Issac Herzog as proposing that Israel “unilaterally disengage” from the West Bank and saying that peace process is one that is not currently possible.

 

Highlighting a recent OCHA report, al-Quds reported that a total of 452 Israeli checkpoints hinder Palestinian life across the West Bank.

 

It also highlighted the launch of $571 million funding appeal to address the humanitarian needs of the occupied Palestinian territories. 

 

Al-Ayyam reported the Middle East Peace Quartet as expressing concerns over “current trends on the ground that pose a threat to the two-state solution.”
