CAIRO, June 8, 2026 (WAFA) – Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty affirmed on Monday Cairo’s full support for the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and for its mandate and vital role in providing services to Palestinian refugees, particularly amid the ongoing deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.
Foreign Affairs Minister Abdelatty made his remarks during a meeting with Acting UNRWA Commissioner-General Christian Saunders at the Foreign Ministry headquarters in Cairo.
Foreign Ministr Abdelatty and Acting UNRWA Commissioner-General Saunder discussed ways to support the UNRWA and the challenges facing its work, as well as the humanitarian developments in the occupied Palestinian Territory, particularly in the Gaza Strip.
Abdelatty underscored Cairo’s commitment to supporting the UNRWA’s exclusive mandate, describing it as an indispensable UN agency that cannot be replaced in serving Palestinian refugees. He reiterated Cairo’s firm rejection of any attempts aimed at forcibly displacing the Palestinian people from their homeland under any pretext.
He extended appreciation to the Agency for its efforts in alleviating the Palestinian refugees’ suffering and strengthening their resilience, especially in light of the ongoing Israeli genocidal aggression against the Strip and the ensuing catastrophic humanitarian conditions.
Abdelatty condemned Israeli measures targeting UNRWA and undermining its ability to carry out its humanitarian mandate, including restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid and essential supplies into the Gaza Strip.
They exchanged views on the future of the Agency's work and the financial and operational challenges it faces across its five fields of operation, particularly in the Gaza Strip. In this regard, Abdelatty listened to Saunder's vision regarding efforts to develop and reform the agency in a manner that contributes to improving the Palestinian refugees’ living conditions and ensuring the continuation of its humanitarian and development services.
