RAMALLAH, November 13, 2025 (WAFA) – The Government Operations Room for Emergency Interventions in the Gaza Strip, under the management of the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, began today the construction of the first shelter center made from locally manufactured tents in the city of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza.
This intervention comes in response to the needs of displaced families residing in areas at risk of flooding with the onset of winter, particularly along Al-Rashid Street and the Sahen Al-Biraka area in Deir al-Balah, which face direct threats due to the accumulation of rainwater and flash floods.
This intervention follows the emergency appeal issued by the Government Operations Room to provide shelter for displaced families living in flood-prone areas.
The project is being implemented with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and in cooperation with the Ministry of National Economy, the Ministry of Local Government, and the Palestinian Water Authority, as part of government efforts to provide emergency shelter that protects families from the dangers of floods and cold weather.
This center is the first of its kind to be established using locally manufactured tents. It is expected to be completed in the coming days, with a capacity of around 70 families. Work will continue on establishing additional shelter centers in coordination with local and international partners, as part of a comprehensive plan that has identified 294 sites for temporary shelter across the governorates of the Gaza Strip.
This project comes amid extremely difficult humanitarian conditions and the ongoing suffering of thousands of displaced families as winter approaches, at a time when the Gaza Strip needs more than 300,000 tents to provide shelter for affected populations. Israeli restrictions on the entry of essential shelter materials and supplies continue to worsen the suffering of residents and increase the need for urgent local solutions.
The Government Operations Room for Emergency Interventions, in cooperation with partner ministries and national, international, and UN institutions, continues to implement urgent humanitarian interventions to ensure the protection of displaced families and the provision of essential services amid the catastrophic conditions facing the population in the Strip
