President Abbas receives written letter from British Premiere on recognition of Palestine

RAMALLAH, September 21, 2025 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas received on Sunday the British Consul General in Jerusalem, Helen Winterton, at the Presidential Headquarters in Ramallah.

President Abbas received a written letter from the British Consul General from British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, officially informing him of the UK government's decision to recognize the independent and sovereign State of Palestine.

The letter affirmed the Palestinian people's right to self-determination, the establishment of their own state based on the two-state solution, and the building of their institutions.

President Abbas praised this historic and courageous British step, stressing that it represents support for achieving peace, a recognition of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, and an embodiment of the UK's commitment to international legitimacy resolutions.

It also constitutes an important step towards achieving a just and lasting peace in the region based on the two-state solution. He reiterated his commitment to all the commitments and reforms undertaken by the State of Palestine during President Mahmoud Abbas's visit to the UK and his meeting with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
