Newspapers Review: President Abbas in Romania, situation at bridge crossing with Jordan focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Wednesday, July 20, 2022 (WAFA) – The state visit of President Mahmoud Abbas to Romania as well as the dismal situation at the Al-Karama/King Hussein/Allenby Bridge crossing with Jordan were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida daily quoted President Abbas in its main front-page story headline saying in Romania that the failure of the two-state solution based on international legitimacy will lead to making hard and complex choices.

Al-Quds daily quoted the President saying that the situation in Palestine is unsustainable, while the third daily, al-Ayyam, said Palestine and Romania signed cooperation agreements as President Abbas left Romania heading to France for a state visit.

The main front-page story in al-Quds daily focused on the situation at Al-Karama Bridge Crossing with Jordan and said that Palestine and Jordan are coordinating steps to force Israel to open the crossing around the clock as thousands of Palestinians seeking to return home after a trip abroad find themselves stuck in Jordan for days due to over-crowding of travelers caused by the short hours the crossing remains open by Israel, which controls the Palestinian side of the crossing.

Al-Ayyam daily highlighted in its main front-page story Israeli settlers’ attacks against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank as well as the army’s demolition of Palestinian-owned structures in different locations in the West Bank. The other two dailies also highlighted this topic.

Al-Ayyam said settlers plan to expand a settlement outpost east of Ramallah and to establish 10 new outposts in the West Bank and quoted the anti-settlement Israeli group, Peace Now, saying that it will act to stop the bullying of settlement outposts.

The newspaper also said Israeli warplanes attacked posts in the Gaza Strip.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Fatah’s Central Committee said it fully supports the position President Abbas stated during the visit of US President Joe Biden to Palestine.

It said the cabinet decision to slash the price of fuel for public transportation vehicles will go into effect on August 1.

It also said members of the US Congress called on Secretary of State Antony Blinken to reject Israel’s classification of Palestinian human rights and civil society organizations as “terrorists.”

Al-Quds said Washington expressed its opposition to Israel’s forceful expulsion of Palestinian residents of Masafer Yatta.

It also said the ambulance services have declared a general strike and a hunger strike at the Red Crescent headquarters in Ramallah demanding their rights.

Al-Ayyam said the Bar Association and civil society groups have formed a committee to demand an end to the decisions by law.

The dailies also reported on the trilateral Iranian-Turkish-Russian summit in Tehran and the fires that rage in Europe due to the heatwave.
