Newspapers Review: Israeli army attacks against peaceful anti-occupation protests focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Saturday, June 11, 2022 (WAFA) – The Israeli army attacks against peaceful anti-occupation and anti-settlement protests in the occupied territories were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida daily printed a large headline on its front page saying: “No to a new Nakba in Masafer Yatta,” in reference to Israeli attempts to dislocate thousands of Palestinian residents of the southern West Bank communities after demolishing their homes claiming the area for Israeli military training.

The paper printed a picture of soldiers attacking a protest in Masafer Yatta of local residents and solidarity groups opposed to the dislodging of the Palestinians.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and the other two dailies, al-Quds and al-Ayyam, also highlighted the Israeli army crackdown on Palestinian protests everywhere in the occupied West Bank and the large number of injuries caused as a result.

Al-Quds said in its main front-page headline story: “Injuries from gunfire, hundreds of trees set on fire.”

Al-Ayyam said dozens of people were injured as a result of the Israeli army crackdown and settler attacks against protesters in several areas.

Al-Ayyam also said that Israeli soldiers broke into al-Majaz community, one of 12 Palestinian communities in Masafer Yatta slated by Israel for annihilation, and carried out a headcount of the people who live there apparently a prelude to dislocate them in light of the Israeli High Court’s May 4 decision allowing the army to demolish the Masafer Yatta communities and remove their residents by force under the pretext of turning the area into a firing zone.

Another Israeli High Court ruling has also drawn strong local and international criticism. The decision has to do with the property of the Greek Orthodox Church in Jerusalem’s Jaffa Gate area, which the court has turned over to Jewish settler groups.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida confirmed Palestinian, Jordanian, and European criticism of the Israeli court’s decision.

Al-Ayyam said the European Union criticized the decision saying it “further increases pressure on the Christian presence in Jerusalem, with threats to Christian communities and to their property by settlers.”

Al-Quds said there was a wide-ranging criticism of the takeover of the Greek Orthodox property.

It said US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Barbara Leaf will travel to Israel and the West Bank from June 11 to 14.

Al-Ayyam said Miss Palestine, Loren Imseeh, drew attention at the Miss Global beauty pageant in Indonesia to the issue of Palestinian freedom fighters incarcerated in Israel by wearing the brown uniform they are forced to wear in the prisons.

It quoted the leader of the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament Iratxe García saying that the European Union has a responsibility to protect the viability of the two-state solution.

It also said Israel recorded a rise in Covid19 among its citizens.
