Newspapers Review: Resumption of US aid, settler runs over woman, developments in Jordan focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Thursday, April 08, 2021 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today highlighted the resumption of US aid to the Palestinians, the death of an elderly Palestinian woman run over by an Israeli settler in the south of the West Bank, and the latest developments in Jordan.

Al-Ayyam daily made the resumption of the US aid as its main front-page story and published reactions from the presidency and the United Nations Palestine refugee agency, UNRWA, welcoming it, while Israel expressed dissatisfaction with this step.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida daily, which also reported on the US aid and Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh welcoming it, said a 73-year-old woman from Samou town, in the south of the West Bank, was killed when an Israeli settler hit her with his car as she crossed a road. It also said the Israeli occupation seized 13 dunums of Palestinian land in the village of Hizma, near Jerusalem, to construct a bypass road.

The third Palestinian Arabic daily, al-Quds, also reported on the US aid and the death of the woman but made the developments in neighboring Jordan as its main front-page story. It quoted King Abdullah of Jordan saying that the strife has been buried and that Jordan was safe and stable.

These remarks from King Abdullah were also reported on the front page of the other two Palestinian Arabic dailies, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida, with the latter also highlighting on its front-page news that President Mahmoud Abbas was in good health after doing medical checkups in Germany and that he is going to return home today.

Al-Quds said Israel gave the green light for the construction of 540 new housing units in the illegal settlement of Har Homa in Jabal Abu Ghuneim area, south of Jerusalem, and said the Palestinian presidency has condemned this decision as defiance of the US administration and the United Nations.

Coronavirus in Palestine was also reported on the front page of the dailies, which said that 18 people have died of the disease yesterday and 2672 new cases were recorded.

Al-Ayyam quoted Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh saying that the pandemic may be around for a long time and that no aid from the Arab countries has arrived for the Palestinians last year.
