Jordan, Egypt join Palestine in stressing need to halt Israeli colonial settlement activity

CAIRO, Wednesday, March 03, 2021 (WAFA) – Jordan and Egypt today joined Palestine in stressing the need to halt all Israeli colonial settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories.

During a tripartite meeting in Cairo, Jordan’s Foreign Affairs Minister Ayman Safadi and Egypt’s Foreign Affairs Minister Sameh Shukri joined their Palestinian counterpart Riyad Malki in stressing that Israeli colonial settlement construction undermines the prospects for the two-state solution and violates United Nations resolutions and international law.

They highlighted the importance of building on the recent efforts aimed at restoring momentum to the long-stalled peace process and looked forward to seeing concerned international actors engage in such efforts.

Spokesperson of Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Hafez, stated that the diplomats attending the meeting agreed to continue their work to create the environment conducive to launching serious and constructive Palestinian-Israeli talks that would end the current stalemate with the ultimate goal of achieving comprehensive, just and lasting peace that would secure the establishment of an independent, viable and territorially contiguous Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on the pre-1967 borders.

The attendees agreed to maintain future coordination and consultation for the common interests and revival of the Middle East peace process.

Shukri reiterated his country’s support for all steps taken by the Palestinian leadership to ensure successful intra-Palestinian dialogue and expressed hope that the upcoming general elections would contribute to ending the intra-Palestinian division.

The diplomats touched upon the latest political developments on the Palestinian arena, the efforts to ensure successful holding of the elections, the draft resolutions to be adopted the Arab foreign ministers during the 155th regular session of the Arab League Summit, besides to the ways to advance the peace process and create the environment conducive to re-launching serious talks with the ultimate goal of establishing the Palestinian state.
