Security Council Vote Simulation had No Negative Vote

RAMALLAH, September 17, 2011 (WAFA) – A simulation UN Security Council session voting on Palestine’s bid for membership held Saturday at Birzeit University had none of the 15 member states voting against, while 12 voted in favor and three abstained.

 

The United States, one of five permanent members with a veto power, abstained along with Germany and Colombia.

 

Lebanon, current president of the Security Council, United Kingdom, Brazil, China, Russia, France, Nigeria, Portugal, Gabon, Bosnia and Herzegovina, South Africa, and India cast the for vote.

 

The simulation, organized by the Fatah Youth Movement and the Student Council in Birzeit University, attempted to show how the vote would go once it decides on the Palestinian application.

 

President Mahmoud Abbas said Friday that he was going to the Security Council to seek membership and that he would submit the application soon after he concludes his speech at the UN General Assembly on Friday.
