BBC Director General Calls for "Immediate Release" of Alan Johnston
RAMALLAH, April 12, 2007, (WAFA)- BBC Director General, Mark Thompson, called Thursday for the immediate release of the BBC reporter in Gaza, Alan Johnston.
"I appeal to all those who may have influence with the kidnappers to use their best endeavors to secure Alan's release, safely and speedily, and to ensure his return to his family and friends as quickly as possible," Thompson said in a press conference held in Ramallah.
Thomson pointed out that he met President Mahmoud Abbas, yesterday, who assured that Johnston is safe and well.
He asserted that the BBC had not been in direct contact with Johnston's captors and had not received any ransom demands.
Thompson told reporters he had met with President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday who told him that there was "credible evidence" that Johnston was "safe and well," and that Palestinians National Authority is "fully engaged with Alan's case and are working to resolve it as soon as possible."
BBC Director General praised the attitude of the Palestinian journalists and citizens of Gaza who practice pressure for the release of Johnston.
