International agencies warn of growing food insecurity due to war

WASHINGTON, April 9, 2026 (WAFA) – The heads of the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the World Food Programme warned that sharp increases in oil, natural gas, and fertilizer prices will lead to higher food prices and increased food insecurity.

In a statement issued after a meeting in Washington on Wednesday evening regarding the war, the heads of the three agencies said that the greatest burden will fall on the most vulnerable populations in the world, particularly in low-income and import-dependent economies.

They affirmed that their institutions will continue to closely monitor developments and "coordinate the use of all available tools to support those affected by the crisis."
