Arab Summit Reiterates Commitment to "Arab Peace Initiative"

Riyadh, March 29, 2007 (WAFA) - Arab leaders reiterated their commitment to the "Arab Peace Initiative", adopted by the 2002 Beirut Summit, as the viable option for settlement of the Arab Israeli conflict on the basis of international legitimacy.

The leaders commissioned a ministerial ad hoc committee to resume contacts with the UN Secretary General, Security Council members, and other concerned parties to mobilize support for the initiative.

They called on Israel to take advantage of the initiative and engage in serious negotiations at all routes.

They voiced solidarity with Lebanon and vowed to provide political and economic support to help the Lebanese Government restore national unity and security.

On Iraq, they called for wider political participation to cover all segments of the Iraqi people, and to combat sectarian strife. They urged the Iraqi Government to disband all militias and expedite the build up of national military and security forces to pave the way for withdrawal of foreign forces.

The leaders reiterated their unequivocal support of the UAE sovereignty over the three islands of Greater and Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa, and voiced their back up of all peaceful measures pursued by the UAE to restore its sovereignty over the said islands.

They denounced Iran's persistent occupation of the three islands as a threat to international peace and security. They also denounced the construction of residential units and the staging of military manouvres in the three islands including their regional waters, air territory, continental rift and economic zone. It called on Iran to discontinue "such vitiations and provocative acts".
