Palestinian group told alleged assailant Barghouti died in hospital after he was shot

RAMALLAH, Thursday, December 20, 2018 (WAFA) – The Israeli army claimed on Thursday that Saleh Barghouti, whose family doubted army reports about his death or how he died, was arrested after he was shot and taken to hospital where he was declared dead hours after his arrest.

The Ramallah-based National Campaign for the Retrieval of the Withheld Bodies of Martyrs said in a statement that the army answer came after attorney Mohammad Abu Sanieh, from the Jerusalem Legal Aid Center, had asked the army on its behalf for clarification regarding what happened to Saleh Barghouti.

Barghouti, suspected of shooting and wounding Israeli settlers near Ramallah last week, was supposedly shot and arrested in an army ambush of a car near Ramallah on December 13. However, his family said witnesses saw him being detained by the army, which later said he was dead prompting the family to wonder if he was dead and if he was murdered after his arrest.

The National Campaign said attorney Sanieh is going to ask the Israeli army to allow Barghouti’s mother to see her son in the morgue in order to identify him. It said previous request in this regard were not answered.
