Health of Hunger Striker al-Qiq at Critical Stage, Friday Demonstrations Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, February 13, 2016 (WAFA) - The critical health condition of Palestinian hunger- striking detainee Muhammad al-Qiq and weekly Friday demonstrations hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

Highlighting the critical health condition of al-Qiq, al-Quds reported on Head of the Detainees and Ex-Detainees Commission, ‘Issa Qaraqe‘, as saying that al-Qiq has entered the most dangerous stage and became on the brink of death.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported in this regard that al-Qiq, who has been hunger striking for 80 days, was on the brink of death.

Highlighting the weekly Friday demonstrations, the dailies reported Israeli forces quelled the demonstrations, which were held in solidarity with hunger striker al-Qiq, leaving dozens of Palestinians shot and injured.

Al-Quds added in this regard that there were some serious injuries among Palestinian demonstrators and that Israeli forces assaulted reporters.

Furthermore, the three dailies covered a meeting of the Middle East Quartet to kick-start stalled peace process in Munich.

Al-Quds reported that the Quartet called on the Palestinian and Israeli sides to take concrete steps in order to progress toward the two-state solution.

Al-Ayyam quoted the Quartet as stating: “genuine Palestinian unity, on the basis of democracy and the PLO principles, is essential to reuniting Gaza and the West Bank under one legitimate, and democratic Palestinian authority.”

The Quartet was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida as warning against Israeli actions that are “dangerously imperiling the viability of the two-state solution.”

US Department of State was reported in al-Ayyam as stating that the Palestinian-Israeli conflict couldn’t be resolved except through the implementation of the two-state solution.

It also reported member of Fatah Central Committee Nabil Sha‘ath as stating that the Quartet should soon be replaced by an international framework capable of bringing the Israeli occupation to an end.

President Mahmoud Abbas was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida as calling for convening an international peace conference setting up a mechanism similar to Ps+1 that would be conducive to ending the Israeli occupation.

Highlighting Israeli violations against Palestinian people and property across the West Bank and Gaza, al-Quds reported that Israeli authorities approved a plan to extend Qalandiya industrial zone through building a 240,000 square-meter area.

Al-Quds reported that US President Barack Obama reluctantly signed into law a trade agreement including provisions that fail to differentiate between Israel and illegal settlements.

The three dailies reported that Palestinian President’s Office sent an urgent letter to UNRWA urging it to refrain from taking any steps which would prejudice Palestinian refugees’ future and life.
