RAMALLAH, June 15, 2015 (WAFA) –
The killing of 22-year-old Abdullah Ghnaimat by Israeli forces in the Ramallah
village of Kafr Malik together with President Mahmoud Abbas’ remarks during the
25th African Union Summit in Johannesburg hit the front page headlines of the
three Arabic Palestinian dailies.
Covering the killing of Ghnaimat
in its main front page news item, al-Ayyam reported that the martyr was first
shot and then run over by an Israeli military vehicle.
Al-Quds reported in this regard
that Ghnaimat’s funeral procession was attended by overwhelming Palestinian
crowds and that the heinous murder was widely condemned.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported in
this regard that Israeli occupation forces savagely ‘assassinated’ Ghnaimat.
Al-Ayyam printed a photo
featuring a Palestinian woman confronting and shouting at Israeli forces
shortly after Ghnaimat was killed in Kafr Malik. Al-Hayat al-Jadida printed
another photo featuring hundreds of Palestinians taking part in Ghnaimat’s
funeral procession.
While Ghnaimat’s killing
dominated the front page of al-Ayyam, al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida opted to
give prominence to the remarks made by President Mahmoud Abbas during the 25th
African Union Summit in Johannesburg.
Al-Quds reported on Abbas as
calling on state leaders to advocate the Palestinian people for ending the
Israeli occupation and urging the labeling of Israeli settlements’ products.
Abbas was quoted in al-Ayyam and
al-Hayat al-Jadida as stating, any initiative to make peace should fall within
the framework of setting a deadline for ending the Israeli occupation.
Highlighting other Israeli
forces’ practices throughout the occupied Palestinian Territory, al-Quds
reported that Israeli forces leveled Palestinian lands near Nablus and that
clashes broke out in East Jerusalem.
Al-Ayyam reported that Israeli
soldiers and settlers forced their way into Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.
The three dailies highlighted
Israel’s attempts to defend its conduct during the 2014 onslaught on Gaza in an
inter-ministerial report. The Israeli internal report was issued about two
weeks before a UN report into the onslaught.
Al-Quds reported that attempting
to forestall the UN inquiry commission’s report about the latest Israeli
aggression on Gaza, Israel claims its military didn’t target Palestinian
civilians and adhered to all legal standards.
It reported on the Palestinian
cabinet as affirming that it would not back down from its demand to conduct an
international inquiry into the onslaught. It also reported on Hamas as
affirming that Israeli forces’ violations against Palestinian civilians are
documented by photo and video material.
Al-Ayyam reported on Israel as
defending its latest onslaught as both ‘lawful’ and ‘legitimate’, claiming that
civilians were not [intentionally] targeted. Al-Hayat al-Jadida slammed the
Israeli report as meant to ‘legitimize’ Israeli war crimes that were
broadcasted during the latest onslaught.
Highlighting expanding boycott of
Israel, al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported that the Norwegian insurance giant, KLP
Kapitalforvaltning has divested its shares from Israeli projects in the West
Bank.
The three dailies reported that
despite of video footage showing Israeli soldiers savagely beating an unarmed
Palestinian with their fists and a riffles butt in the Ramallah refugee camp of
al-Jalazoun, Israeli military decided not to open an investigation but to
impose lenient penalties on them.
The three dailies also reported
that the Israeli government has approved a draft legislation that would allow
hunger-striking Palestinian detainees to be force fed.
