Newspapers Review: Attempts by Pro-Settlement Association to Take Over Land in Silwan as Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, May 24, 2015 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies focused in their Sunday issue on attempts by an Israeli pro-settlement association to take over a 5-dunum of land along with its properties, which are inhibited by around 80 Palestinian families in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan.

Following are the main headlines of the three dailies:

Al-Quds:

-          Ateret Cohanim pro-settlement association seeks to take over around 5-dumuns of Silwan land.

-          Seven thousand Palestinian refugees in Syria’s al-Yarmouk Refugee Camp are threatened with displacement.

-          UNRWA affirms that so far not one single house has been reconstructed in [the war-torn] Gaza Strip.

-          Israeli forces open fire at Palestinian fishermen and farmers in Gaza.

Al-Ayyam:

-          An Israeli pro-settlement association seeks to takeover 5-dunums of Silwan land inhibited by around 80 Palestinian families.

-          In support of Israel, US, Britain and Canada foil an Arab initiative aimed at ridding the world of nuclear weapons.

-          Settlers attack Palestinian homes in Hebron with rocks.

-          [Israeli Prime minister Benjamin] Netanyahu thanks the US [for blocking a global document aimed at ridding the world of nuclear weapons], while UN secretary general Ban Ki-Moon voices disappointment.

-          President Mahmoud Abbas phone calls king of Saudi Arabia, and offers condolences over victims of terror attack on a mosque in eastern Saudi Arabia.

-           Iraqi forces conduct a military operation to take back al-Ramadi area that was captured by Daesh.

Al-Hayyat al-Jadida:

     -President Mahmoud Abbas affirms the Palestinian position in solidarity with Saudi Arabia in its war against terrorism.  

-          An Israeli pro-settlement association seeks to take over 5-dumuns of Silwan land.

-          [Head of the Prisoners Affairs Issa] Qaraqe: Israeli investigators used pliers to torture a detained Palestinian child.

-          Ban-Ki Moon voices disappointment over failure of the conference on the 1970 nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), while Israel thanks the US [over foiling the conference].
