PLO's Executive Committee holds meeting to discuss the latest political and field developments

 

RAMALLAH, May 19, 2026 (WAFA) –  The Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization held on Tuesday a meeting at the headquarters of the Palestine Liberation Organization in the city of Ramallah, chaired by Deputy President Hussein al-Sheikh, and attended by members of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, where the latest political and field developments were discussed, as well as the efforts exerted to stop the ongoing Israeli aggression against our Palestinian people in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem, and the importance of maintaining permanent linkages between institutions in both parts of the homeland, and ways to end the Israeli occupation, and to realize the independence of the State of Palestine with its capital East Jerusalem, in accordance with the resolutions of international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative.

The Executive Committee affirmed its full support for the efforts of President Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian leadership in mobilizing Arab, regional, and international support with brothers, partners, and friends, in order to protect the legitimate national rights of our Palestinian people, and to consolidate the ceasefire, and to allow the entry of humanitarian aid, and to proceed with reconstruction, and to stop displacement and settlement expansion and settler terrorism, and the release of funds withheld by the occupation government, and to preserve the historical and legal status of the Islamic and Christian holy sites, and to continue working with partners, brothers, and the international community in a manner that leads to a political process based on the resolutions of international legitimacy to end the occupation, and to implement the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and to realize their independent state with its capital East Jerusalem. The Executive Committee extended its congratulations to the Palestinian National Liberation Movement "Fatah" on the occasion of the success of the proceedings of the Eighth General Conference of the Movement, and also congratulated the members of the elected Central Committee and Revolutionary Council, wishing them success in serving the Palestinian national project and strengthening the unity of the Palestinian national movement.

The Committee affirmed that the successive electoral successes achieved, starting from the Shabiba elections, through the local bodies elections held in the past month of April, up to the "Fatah" Movement elections, reflect the commitment of the State of Palestine and the Palestinian leadership to the democratic approach and enhancing political participation and renewing national and institutional life with broad participation from the women's and youth sectors.

In this context, the Executive Committee discussed the situation regarding mapping out a roadmap to prepare for the Palestinian National Council elections scheduled for next November, as well as preparing to hold the general elections, which requires completing the adoption of the Palestinian Basic Law, and the political parties law and the general elections law, through continuing the comprehensive national dialogue and adopting the draft Basic Law by the Central Council before submitting the Basic Law to a public referendum, paving the way for holding parliamentary elections, whereby the elected parliament members become members of the upcoming National Council, in addition to the mechanism for adopting representatives of the National Council abroad in a manner that enhances democratic legitimacy and the unity of the Palestinian political system for the Palestinian people everywhere.

The Executive Committee also expressed its thanks and appreciation to the sister Arab Republic of Egypt and the sister Republic of Lebanon for the facilitations and support they provided to ensure the success of holding "Fatah" Movement elections in the arenas of Egypt and Lebanon, reflecting the depth of fraternal and historical relations with the Palestinian people.

On the economic front, the Executive Committee discussed the difficult economic and financial conditions facing the State of Palestine as a result of the Israeli occupation's continued imposition of the financial and economic siege and withholding of the Palestinian people's funds, emphasizing the importance of launching a comprehensive national societal economic dialogue, with the participation of various national sectors, to confront these challenges, and to strengthen the resilience of our people's sons and daughters, and to protect national and social stability.

In conclusion of its meeting, the Executive Committee affirmed its continued work to strengthen national unity, end the occupation, realize the independent sovereign State of Palestine with its capital East Jerusalem, and safeguard the independent Palestinian national decision.
