BEIRUT, July 31, 2026 (WAFA) — Lebanese President Joseph Aoun met on Friday with a senior Palestinian delegation to discuss preparations for upcoming Palestinian elections, the situation of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, and developments in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The delegation included Fatah Central Committee member Yasser Abbas; Palestine Liberation Organization Executive Committee members Ahmad Majdalani and Ahmad Abu Holi; Minister Ahmad Assaf, general supervisor of the Palestinian official media; and Palestinian Ambassador to Lebanon Mohammad Al-Asaad.
The delegation briefed President Aoun on preparations for Palestinian National Council elections abroad, particularly in Lebanon, as well as arrangements for holding Palestinian Legislative Council elections in the Palestinian territories.
The delegation also discussed the situation of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, stressing the need to complete implementation of the Lebanese-Palestinian understanding on handing over weapons inside refugee camps to the Lebanese Army and granting Palestinian refugees their humanitarian rights, in line with the outcomes of the May 2025 summit between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and President Aoun.
The officials also outlined the situation in the occupied West Bank, citing continued Israeli attacks, assaults by Israeli colonists under the protection of Israeli forces, the economic blockade, and the ongoing Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip.
They reaffirmed the importance of adhering to the Arab Peace Initiative and praised Lebanon's position in support of it.
Meantime, President Aoun stressed the importance of the Palestinian side's commitment to the principle that arms should remain exclusively under state authority, cooperation with Lebanese security agencies, and implementation of measures adopted by the Lebanese cabinet.
He also emphasized the importance of pursuing diplomatic efforts and continuing Lebanese-Palestinian dialogue through the committee established by the cabinet.
