RAMALLAH, August 24, 2025 (WAFA) – The Palestinian Government and its Emergency Operations Room for Interventions in the Gaza Strip called on Sunday for immediate and effective international action to stop the deepening famine in the Gaza Strip, following confirmation by the UN Famine Review Committee (FRC) that Gaza Governorate has officially entered Phase 5 — the highest level of famine classification according to the IPC scale.
The statement reaffirmed a warning issued by Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa on May 7, 2025, during a press conference with UN and international partners, civil society representatives, and the private sector, where he declared that Gaza had already entered a state of famine due to Israel’s ongoing blockade and denial of humanitarian access.
“This unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe is a direct result of a deliberate policy imposed by Israeli forces over the past 600 days,” the statement said, citing the use of starvation as a weapon of war aimed at exterminating civilians. It highlighted Israel’s systematic closure of crossings, restrictions on access to clean water and sanitation, and the militarization of humanitarian aid as tools of collective punishment.
The government and emergency task force warned of the rapid spread of deadly hunger and severe malnutrition across all governorates in Gaza, particularly among children and the elderly. They urged the international community to take swift action to stop Israel’s starvation campaign and open all crossings to ensure the immediate and unimpeded entry of adequate food, medicine, and relief supplies.
The statement also called on the UN Security Council, international unions, parliaments, and civil society organizations to increase pressure on their governments to end support for Israel and to impose concrete sanctions in response to the ongoing crimes.
The Palestinian government concluded by stressing the need for a unified stance and collective global efforts to save lives in Gaza, and to raise a strong voice against thewar of extermination and starvation targeting the Palestinian people.
