NEW YORK, January 1, 2025 (WAFA) – Algeria Wednesday assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in New York.
Algeria began its presidency of the UNSC as a successor of the United States throughout January 2025.
The Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, is scheduled to hold a press conference on Thursday, January 2, 2025 in New York on the program of work of the Security Council.
The Security Council has 15 members: 5 permanent members with veto power (China, France, Russian Federation, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the United States of America) and 10 non-permanent members, five of which are elected each year by the General Assembly for a two-year term. The non-permanent member states elected this year are Algeria, Denmark, Greece, Guyana, Pakistan, Panama, Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia and Somalia.
