Labor ministry holds UNRWA Commissioner responsible for cessation of provision of services in the camps

RAMALLAH, Tuesday, April 11, 2023 (WAFA) - The Ministry of Labor today held the administration of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and its Commissioner-General, in particular, responsible for all the repercussions that resulted from the cessation of providing services in the Palestinian refugee camps as a result of the strike by the agency’s workers, which is continuing for more than two months.

The ministry called in a statement on UNRWA Commissioner-General to back down from his intransigence and show understanding for the social and humanitarian situation in the Palestinian camps, and to immediately start a dialogue with the workers to find solutions to the conflict, urging him to immediately announce the acceptance of the proposed initiative to end the strike.

It made reference to the deterioration in the humanitarian situation inside the Palestinian camps, in all areas of health, education, environment, and services, and its negative impact on all aspects of life, which left students, patients, children, women, and the elderly in dismal situation and without any services.

The Ministry of Labor drew attention to the negotiations it oversaw in order to bring the views of the two parties closer together and to ensure the cessation of the strike and the return of workers to provide the required services, the latest of which was the initiative that was presented jointly by all institutions in the homeland to the two parties to put an end for the strike.

It said the union of workers reacted positively to this initiative while no response was received from UNRWA management and its commissioner-general, which was supposed to be submitted before the start of Ramadan.
