Prisoners' institutions slam inclusion of Palestinian assosication on US 'terrorism' list

RAMALLAH, June 15, 2025 (WAFA) – Prisoners' institutions such as the Commission of Detainees' and Ex-Detainees' Affairs, the Palestinian Prisoner's Society, the Higher Committee for Prisoners' and Ex-Prisoners' Affairs, and the Center for Defending Freedoms have slammed the inclusion of Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association, along with several other Palestinian organizations, on the US Treasury Department's "terrorist" list.

The institutions considered the allegations made by the US Treasury Department regarding the association of Addameer—one of the most prominent Palestinian organizations working for decades to defend the rights of Palestinian prisoners—with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) to be false and baseless.

They also considered the decision to be a political move linked to the course of aggression led by the Israeli occupation regime for years. This decision classifies Addameer and other Palestinian human rights and civil society organizations as "illegal" and has also issued military orders to close them.

The institutions emphasized that this decision is yet another attempt by the occupation to criminalize the work of Palestinian human rights and civil society organizations, undermine their effective role in defending Palestinian prisoners, and silence every voice defending Palestinian rights.

They stressed that what is happening to one of the most established Palestinian human rights institutions constitutes a comprehensive targeting of all Palestinian human rights and civil society institutions, and of the issue of prisoners, which is one of the most prominent issues revealing the nature of the criminality and brutality practiced by the Israeli occupation regime.

Additionally, they pointed out that Addameer, along with other human rights organizations, has worked for decades to expose these violations, and its role has intensified since the beginning of the war of extermination against our people in Gaza, in light of the escalating Israeli crimes against prisoners and the transformation of prisons and camps into arenas of torture.

The organizations called on the international human rights system and the United Nations to condemn this US decision, which is part of attempts to target the human rights system in Palestine during one of the bloodiest periods in our people's history, amid the ongoing genocide and escalating comprehensive aggression against Palestinian land and people.

They also called for action to halt this decision, which affects all human rights activists worldwide, and to increase support for Palestinian human rights organizations, in the context of supporting the Palestinian right to self-determination and protecting the Palestinian national existence.
