RAMALLAH, August 26, 2011 (WAFA) – Honduras Friday became the second Central American country after El Salvador to recognize the State of Palestine in the last 24 hours.

It said in a letter to President Mahmoud Abbas that Honduras recognizes Palestine as free independent and sovereign state, stressing that it will support Palestine’s drive to win membership at the United Nations in September.

Abbas thanked Honduras for its decision, expressing hope that this will bolster bilateral relations.

The Palestinians need support from two-thirds of the UN member states, at least 130, to win recognition and membership. Recognition of the Central American countries is crucial to reach the needed number.
