Fatah’s Eighth General Conference continues for second day in Ramallah

RAMALLAH, May 15, 2026 (WAFA) – Proceedings of the Eighth General Conference of the Fatah movement continued on Friday for a second consecutive day at the Ahmad Shuqairi Hall in the presidential headquarters in Ramallah, alongside parallel sessions held in the Gaza Strip, Cairo, and Beirut.

The conference opened on Thursday with the participation of President Mahmoud Abbas, ambassadors and members of the diplomatic corps accredited to the State of Palestine, religious leaders, representatives of Palestinian factions and national forces, and civil society organizations.

Around 2,580 members are taking part in the conference, including approximately 1,600 in Ramallah, 400 in the Gaza Strip, 400 in Cairo, and 200 in Beirut.

Under the movement’s internal regulations, conference members will elect 80 members to the Revolutionary Council and 18 members to the Central Committee, although the conference has the authority to increase or decrease these numbers through a formal decision.

The three-day conference, running from Thursday through Saturday, began with speeches by President Mahmoud Abbas, representatives of Palestinian national factions, and representatives of Palestinians living in Israel. Internal sessions followed to verify the legal quorum and elect the conference presidency committee.

During the evening session on Thursday, members elected the elections committee and formed various conference committees tasked with following up on the agenda and organizational matters.

Conference members also unanimously re-elected President Mahmoud Abbas as leader and commander-in-chief of the Fatah movement, expressing confidence in his leadership during a critical stage in Palestinian history.

Friday’s sessions include meetings of specialized committees to discuss organizational issues within the movement and political developments related to the Palestinian cause, with the aim of producing a comprehensive national vision to protect Palestinian rights and strengthen public resilience.

The agenda also includes opening nominations for membership in the Central Committee and Revolutionary Council, announcing preliminary candidate lists, and allowing time for withdrawals and appeals ahead of the publication of final lists.

On the third and final day, voting is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. and continue until 3:00 p.m., followed immediately by vote counting, the announcement of results, and the issuance of the conference’s final statement.
